Leaves of Absence
Subpages
RISD allows for leaves of absence in the following categories: Personal, Medical, Administrative, Study Abroad, and Military. Students may apply for a leave of absence for a period of up to 1 year, or up to 2 years for a military service leave. Students are expected to return to RISD at the conclusion of their leave or request a leave extension of up to one more year. Extensions beyond a year may be considered. A student who has not returned to RISD after their leave will be officially withdrawn from the institution.

Leaves of absence may be requested during a semester up until the course withdrawal deadline. After the conclusion of the withdrawal period. leaves are granted sparingly and in the case of extenuating circumstances beyond the ability of the student to predict or control. Students who are granted a leave of absence within the add/drop period will be dropped from all classes. Within the withdrawal period, students will be withdrawn from all classes. After the withdrawal period, students taking non-medical leaves of absence will receive a "WF" grade. See the Academic Calendar for specific dates.
Students on a leave of absence are still considered candidates for the RISD degree even though they are not formally enrolled. Students who receive permission from RISD to enroll elsewhere while on leave must be registered at that institution as a guest or visiting (non-degree seeking) student, not as a transfer or degree-seeking student. Students can only be candidates for a degree at one institution at a time. Students who experience a change in circumstances may submit an online Leave of Absence Extension form to extend their hiatus for up to one year if additional time away from RISD is needed. or a withdrawal form if no longer interested in returning to RISD.
Students on a leave of absence retain their student status and RISD email account, even though they are not formally enrolled during their leave. Please note: Students on any type of leave lose card access and may not use campus buildings, classrooms, facilities, or resources reserved for enrolled students. This includes, but is not limited to, access to Dining Services, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and Health Services. Students on leave may not hold or continue to hold student leadership or employment positions. However, they are still beholden to the Student Code of Conduct and any and all applicable RISD policies, including the Residence Life Policies (especially the guest policy) if visiting the residence halls during their leave.
Students who are on leave may be a guest of another student, attend events open to the public, or come onto campus to conduct RISD business unless they have been previously notified by the College that they are prohibited from doing so. Violation of any of this policy or any RISD policy will be referred to the office of Conduct and Community Standards and may affect a student's ability to return within their originally scheduled time frame, regardless if they have been medically cleared or have otherwise completed the conditions of their return.
