Color is never static. This seminar takes a critical look at color and its applications across categories of time and place. Through historical and contemporary case studies in art and design, we explore the origins and evolution of color pigments and dyes in their material dimensions, chemical processes, and cultural significance. Our work intersects with the topics of environmental sustainability, political/economic/scientific technologies of production and consumption, and emotional/spiritual systems of aesthetics and symbolism. Readings will range from first-hand historical accounts to theoretical writings. Every week students will choose a small research topic and will report their findings, culminating in a final project that is meaningful to their own creative practice.
